Of all the many outstanding composers to emerge from Australia in recent years, Phillip Houghton must surely be the most challenging and original. John Williams spotted his talent some years ago, and the time is long overdue for the rest of us to catch up. Here we have a cross section of Houghtons solo and chamber works involving the guitar, and a set of performances which equal the premiere league quality of the musical content.

The best, however, is yet to come. The Light on the Edge is a twenty minute work in four movements for guitar duo, didjeridu, double bass, harp and percussion. All this, together with the vast array of 'environment sounds' provided by Peter Mumme, creates a world of sound so unique and captivating that one wonders why the genius (yes, i did say genius) of Phillip Houghton has so far gained only limited recognition outside his home territory.
